Beach Volleyball Highlights

SPIKE UNIVERSITY has set a high expectation for beach volleyball in New England.  This page highlights how beach volleyball fits into this corner of the USA and celebrates all great things we love about the game!

SPIKE-U started beach volleyball in New England in April, 2011 with a 14 player roster.  Today, more than 2000 players have attended a SPIKE-U event.  Beach volleyball for youth in New England continues to grow every year.

Overview and History:

Beach volleyball started getting formalized in 1922 in Santa Monica, CA while professional beach volleyball started getting formalized in the 1980's with Pro tour's

The largest beach volleyball event that started in 1983 (all ages) is held annually in Seaside, Oregon (www.seasidebeachvolleyball.com) with more than 175 nets and 800 teams!

Matt Morrissette, Spike-U's founder and CEO started playing beach volleyball when he was 17 at Hampton Beach, NH in 1988.

The AAU (The Amateur Athletic Union) claims it started a beach volleyball national JUNIOR championship tournament since 1993

Beach volleyball became a medal event in the 1996 Olympics

In 2012, the USA NCAA began offering beach volleyball as a College Division I sanctioned sport with a dozen colleges creating the first beach volleyball collegiate programs

SPIKE-U Beach Volleyball Equipment:

SpikeU uses three types of beach volleyballs.  Only if needed, SPIKE-U uses a Tachikara VOLLEY-LITE ball for U10/U12.  For all other age divisions, SPIKE-U uses either the official EVP beach volleyball (Brine or Wilson) or an official Spalding King-Of-The-Beach beach volleyball.

Indoor Beach Volleyball:

The closest indoor beach volleyball used to be The Sandbox in Connecticut, but it closed down in 2012. The Sandbox will reopen Fall 2016 so look for SpikeU there.  The next closest locations are two-fold: New York City, NY and Rochester, NY.
